Project “Education and teaching on animal welfare- for humans, animals and environment” aim was to contribute to the development (synthesis) of modern formal educational program harmonized with the EU standards through the integration of animal welfare teaching and education into formal educational plan and program (curricula). Project was implemented in 2009 by ORCA in partnership with Pedagogic Society of Serbia. Funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) under “Civil Society Advocacy Initiative” program, and was led by the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC). Value of the project was 36.869,00$.

Animal welfare education and teaching is a process of adopting knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values about animal welfare with title role in developing the children personality, and the public in general (general public). Contents were designed in order to increase awareness, understandings and knowledge of issues that concern responsible behavior toward animals and nature. Topics covered are intellectually stimulating and are important part of the modern human culture, especially for young persons. Project “Education and teaching on animal welfare- for humans, animals and environment” aims was to raise awareness about the importance of education and teaching on animal welfare and to promote universal values such as participation, activism, responsibility and empathy.  Within the scope of the project, in cooperation with the experts for formal education in Serbia Initial curriculum framework for the education and teaching on animal welfare had been developed and it encourages students, teachers and experts to participate in a process of its development. As a result of this project, the fourth grade subject “Nature and society” had officially incorporated: “students know what animal welfare is and how to protect it” by Institute for Evaluation of Education Quality.

Project main activities:

Development of the Initial curriculum framework for the education and teaching on animal welfare through active involvement of experts in the formal education;

Implementation of the public debate with participation of all stakeholders, especially schools and parents, related to education and teaching on animal welfare (EOAF) in formal curricula;

Promotional activities with objective to raising public awareness about importance of the integration of EAOF in formal curriculum (organizing promotional tables, distribution of informative materials, project web presentation, working with media);

Contest in art and literacy for preschools, elementary and high schools- with an object to educate children and young about EAOF;

Realisation of photo contest for all interested citizens in the area of animal welfare.
