Project „Abandoned dogs in Bogatic – humane and effective control“
Abandoned dogs represent one of the most abundant and important problems that local communities face throughout Serbia. Animal Welfare Act (”Official Gazette”, no. 41/09) obliges local self-governments to develop and implement dog population control programmes in accordance to the specific characteristics of their environment (Article 54 of the Animal Welfare Act).
Through this project, we support the municipality of Bogatic to develop an efficient mechanism of humane dog population control which is completely in line with the Article 54. of the Animal Welfare Act and the international standards set by World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
To accomplish that we are conducting research on current state, capacities and needs of the Bogatic municipality in this area. This includes owned and stray dog population assessment, research of the owners’ habits and behaviuor, owned and stray dog welfare assessment, citizen attitudes research, assessment of the carrying capacity of the environment, as well as the research of capacities and attitudes of key stakeholders in area of dog population management in the community.
Based on baseline data collected on field through research, we develop a dog population control programme adapted to the specific characteristics of the municipality of Bogatic. Research will ensure that the dog population control programme is effective, realistic and completely tailored for the municipality of Bogatic.
The project had been implemented in 2016. It was financed by the municipality of Bogatic and co-financed by ORCA. Find out more about our activities in Bogatic by seeing the video
The activities carried out in Bogatic helped us to develop a first comprehensive model of humane and effective dog population management for cities and municipalities in Serbia.
